Understanding the Stages of Menopause
Perimenopause
Perimenopause is the phase leading up to menopause, often beginning in your 40s.
During this time, hormonal fluctuations can cause a range of symptoms, such as:
-
Irregular periods
-
Hot flushes and night sweats
-
Sleep disturbances
-
Mood changes
-
Changes in libido
Our Glen Iris GPs can help identify perimenopause symptoms early and guide you with appropriate support options.
Menopause
Menopause is confirmed when you haven’t had a period for 12 consecutive months. It typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 and may be accompanied by a range of symptoms including:
-
Persistent hot flushes
-
Vaginal dryness or discomfort
-
Difficulty sleeping
-
Low mood or irritability
-
Weight changes
We’ll work with you to create a care plan that addresses your symptoms while supporting your long-term health.
Postmenopause
The years following menopause come with a higher risk of certain health conditions, such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease, due to declining oestrogen levels.
Ongoing care during postmenopause is essential for:
-
Bone density support
-
Heart health monitoring
-
Mental and cognitive wellbeing
Our female GPs provide proactive monitoring and support to help you maintain your health and confidence.
