Have you ever been going about your day and come across a scent that you can't quite put your finger on, but it smells all too familiar and conjures up a specific memory? Well, it's no surprise because the human nose can remember around 50,000 different scents. Pretty incredible right?
Scent, one of the five main senses evokes memories by activating what's called the brain's hippocampus and amygdala. Smell is the sense most closely connected to memory. Certain memories and emotions can be triggered by a single sensory clue, from the smell of caramelized sugar taking you back to that cute bakery in Italy or the smell of a certain food that made you unwell, making you feel instantly sick all over again.
